Because our Insight tour was over and our flight to Bucharest was in the late afternoon, there was no need to get up early. There were no commitments for the day before our flight.
We went downstairs to the Hilton restaurant at 9am for another excellent breakfast. As we were leaving, we saw David coming into the restaurant. He'd been up early overseeing the departure of most of the rest of the tour group who'd had early flights out of Vienna.
Since it was a Sunday, the shops were closed. So Suzy decided to go to the museum to see an exhibition of artwork by famous painters. I stayed in the hotel to catch up with my photos from the trip. Along there was a cable connection in the room, it was still slow and it took ages to upload all the photos to my photo site.
Last night, we'd arranged a late checkout for 2pm instead of the standard 12 noon timing. Initially we'd planned to leave our bags with the hotel before having lunch and catching the train to the airport. However the concierge convinced us to catch the train now and have lunch at the airport.
The train for the airport departs from the building adjacent to our hotel. Austrian Airlines have a check-in counter next to the entrance to the station. We checked in our bags and prayed that they would arrive in Bucharest successfully this evening.
The train runs every half hour. It is a 16-minute non-stop trip to the airport which is located in green fields outside the city. Everything worked like clockwork as you would expect - except that I was surprised that the train left almost a minute late!
The train takes you right into the airport complex at Terminal 3 which is where our plane was due to depart from. We got there at about 3:15pm - well before our 5:30pm flight. After going through customs and security, we found a bar where we had a light lunch and a glass of wine.
They'd told us that the flight would be operated by Estonian Air rather than by Austrian Air. Previously I hadn't realised that Estonia had an airline and we were wondering how good they might be.
It turned out to be quite a good flight. They had to take us to the aircraft on the tarmac in a bus and the flight was quite full. The seats were cramped and uncomfortable - my seat seemed to have a bar right in the middle of my back. They served us a snack which consisted of a biscuit and a choice of soft drinks or alcohol.
We had another mishap with the wine. This time it was Suzy's glass - leaving red wine over both of us. I must have looked like a cheap drunk.
The plane reached Bucharest just after 8pm. There is a one hour time difference between Vienna and Bucharest. The driver was waiting for us and drove us on the 20 minute journey to our hotel near the centre of the city.
The Berthelot Hotel is not an imposing international hotel like some of the hotels we've been staying at recently on our trip. However, the room is quite spacious and comfortable.
The internet connection is excellent. As usual they have WiFi available but they also have a cable connection. The WiFi is stable and fast - about 5Mb/s. The cable connection is very fast - almost 100Mb/s download and upload. I get 100Mb/s download at home but slower upload.
I didn't expect to get such speeds in Romania because we'd heard it was an undeveloped country. I wish I'd known about the excellent internet speeds here because I would have waited until I got here to upload my photos instead of wasting a lot of time in the Vienna hotel room this morning when I could have been out going for a walk.
After settling into our room, we went downstairs to have a sandwich and a glass of wine for a late dinner. They were more than happy to serve us. They had to turn on the lights in the restaurant for us.
We have plenty of clothes to be washed and had planned to use the hotel's cleaning service tomorrow because, as usual in Eastern Europe, they don't have a guest laundry. We were surprised to find out that their cleaning service doesn't allow for underpants and socks. So Suzy had to wash these in the basin in our room and we hung them all up in the room in front of the air conditioner. She also soaked her outfit to try to get the wine stains out.
It was about 11:20pm before we got to bed.
